Product Details

Jeep Wrangler 1997, Transmission Gear by Omix-ADA®. Direct Fit. OE Style. The cluster gear, also called the countergear, is actually a series of gears that rotates as one assembly on roller or needle bearings in the bottom of the transmission case. It's in constant mesh with the input shaft gear and the other gears on the mainshaft. Broken or damaged cluster gear teeth can cause transmission noise and difficulty shifting. If any one of the gears is defective, the entire cluster gear must be replaced. Omix-ADA has the new replacement that will have you shifting smoothly again.

Power flows through the transmission input shaft, through the cluster gear, and then through the selected gear that is locked to the mainshaft by the synchronizer sleeve. Lower gear ratios (higher numerically) multiply the engines torque to initially move and accelerate the vehicle. Higher gear ratios (lower numerically) provide less engine torque but allow higher vehicle speed. This allows the vehicle to cruise at highway speed at low engine rpm for better fuel economy.

A gear problem will usually be associated with a particular gear, not all gears. Listen for noise in each gear and shift the transmission through all gears, feeling and listening for hard shifting, gear clash, or the inability to shift into a gear. When the transmission is disassembled, inspect each gear of the cluster gear for chipped, cracked or broken teeth. Inspect the bearing surfaces for damage that would prevent smooth operation. If any damage to any gear or the bearing surfaces is evident, the entire cluster gear must be replaced.

If symptoms and inspection determine the need for a new cluster gear, get the one that's designed and specifically manufactured for your Jeep. It's made to fit and function the same or better than original equipment, so you can be assured that installation will go smoothly and operation will be flawless. The cluster gear is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.
