Product Details

Jeep Wrangler 1989, Transmission Synchronizer Hub by Omix-ADA®. Direct Fit. OE Style. The synchronizer brings parts that are rotating at different speeds to one speed. It consists of a hub that is splined to the mainshaft, 2 blocking rings, insert detents and their springs, and a sleeve. Acting on the shift lever moves the shift shaft and fork, which in turn moves the sleeve to lock the selected gear to the mainshaft. A worn synchronizer can make shifting hard, or in extreme cases, prevent shifting.

When the transmission is in neutral, the transmission gears are meshed with the cluster gear, but also turn freely on the mainshaft. When the driver puts the transmission in gear, the shifter moves the shift rail, and the shift fork in turn moves the synchronizer sleeve. When the sleeve moves, the inserts push the blocking ring against the shoulder of the gear. The cone on the blocking ring acts as a kind of clutch to bring the gear to the same speed as the blocking ring, which allows the synchronizer sleeve to slide over the gear's clutch teeth, fully engaging the synchronizer and locking the gear to the mainshaft.

The most common wear parts of a synchronizer assembly are the blocking rings, which are usually made of bronze or brass. Inspect the blocking rings for worn and rounded clutch teeth, damage to the insert engagement area, and wear to the cone surface. There are fine grooves in the cone area that disappear with wear. Inspect the splines on the hub and sleeve for wear; the sleeve should slide freely on the hub. Also check the inserts and insert springs for damage.

If symptoms and inspection determine the need for a new synchronizer assembly, get the one that's designed and specifically manufactured for your Jeep. It's made to fit and function the same or better than original equipment, so you can be assured that installation will go smoothly and operation will be flawless. The synchronizer assembly is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.
