TPMS Service Kits

A typical Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensor is a combination valve stem, pressure sensor, wireless transmitter, and battery in one unit. But while the electronic portion of the sensor is part of a critical on-board vehicle safety system, the traditional valve stem components are no less important. Because replacement TPMS sensors are not cheap, and replacement can be involved, service kits are available to repair the valve stem so the entire sensor doesn’t have to be replaced. TPMS valve stems may look like ordinary valve stems but they should only be serviced with components for TPMS sensor valve stems. TPMS sensors can have an integral, aluminum valve stem or a rubber valve stem that is fastened to the sensor. If a sensor with an aluminum valve stem is removed from a wheel and reinstalled, a new valve stem cap, nickel-plated valve core (a conventional brass core should not be used), retaining nut, and seal, which are included in a service kit, should be installed. A new rubber TPMS valve stem should always be installed when the old one is removed from a rim.

To properly service TPMS sensor valve stems you should have the right tools. Components like aluminum retaining nuts should be torqued to spec because they can be easily overtightened, resulting in damage and/or leaks.
