Electric Smart ForTwo Production Model on Its Way for 2012

The Smart ForTwo Electric has been available nationally for several months now, but in spite of that, it’s often overlooked when it comes to choices on the electric-vehicle arena. The reason for this is the model’s limited availability and lease-only policy, which is going to change in 2012, though.

At the moment, if the pint-sized electric car inspires your curiosity, you can lease one for $599 a month with $2,500 due at signing for the EV coupe. A drop-top model is available for $649 a month. Starting January 2012, Daimler (owner of Smart) plans to launch the third generation of the Smart ForTwo Electric, which will be avaialble for both lease and purchase.

Delivering an estimated range of 63 miles in combined city and highway driving, the Smart ForTwo Electric can pick up a maximum speed of 62.5 mph. The electric micro car can be fully charged in less than eight hours.

The electrified Smart will be produced in limited quantities in 2011: only 250 models will be produced for U.S. consumption, and 1,500 will be sold worldwide.
