Power Brake Booster by Omix-ADA®. Power brake boosters are generally reliable components, but if your Jeep has a very hard brake pedal and it feels like you need both feet to stop, chances are your booster has failed. If testing confirms this, don't spend a lot of dough at the dealer or waste time trying to track one down at the chain store, when you can get an OEM quality replacement from the Jeep specialists at Omix-Ada.
Power brake boosters use atmospheric pressure to assist with braking. A booster is divided into 2 halves, separated by a rubber diaphragm. Without the brakes applied, there is vacuum, supplied by the engine, on both sides of the diaphragm. When the brake pedal is applied, a valve opens on the firewall side of the booster, allowing atmospheric pressure to enter and push on the diaphragm, which in turn pushes on the master cylinder piston, providing power assist.
Power boosters usually fail because the rubber diaphragm inside is leaking. It can become cracked and worn from age or contaminated, particularly if brake fluid from the master cylinder leaks inside. To see if the booster is operating properly, push on the brake pedal several times to exhaust all vacuum from the booster. Press firmly on the brake pedal and start the engine. When the engine begins to run, the pedal should fall slightly, indicating that power assist is being applied. If there is no action from the pedal, the brake booster is not functioning.
If your booster requires replacement, get the OEM quality booster that's specifically made for your Jeep. This is no rebuilt unit; it's brand new and will install and perform just like a new part from the dealer, but at a much better value.
