In the beginning of the 1960s, when the Oldsmobile Jetfire was manufactured, there was nothing like it on American roads – it was the first American production car with a turbocharged fluid injection engine that could pump out unbelievable 215 horsepower. This engine was certainly ahead of its time, capable of producing more torque than a twice bigger naturally aspirated motor. The engine was the F-85 Cutlass’s 215-cu.in. V8 equipped with a Garrett turbocharger. Because a much higher compression ratio (10.25 to one) could cause detonation without modern engine management systems, “Turbo Rocket Fluid” (alcohol and water) was used to prevent 'spark-knock'. This fluid was injected into the engine to control the combustion process by keeping a more uniform burning rate.

During its production run for two model years only (1962-1963), a limited number of 3,765 Jetfires were built.
