An intake manifold is designed for even distribution of the airstream between the cylinders. It is the final stage of the air intake assembly that supplies the engine with air. Besides providing air distribution, the manifold may also be used for housing the throttle body – the major governing unit of the gasoline engine. Since engine performance largely depends on geometrical parameters of the manifold, such as the size of an intake plenum or length and shape of the runners, modern manifolds are made adjustable, with the valves regulating the airflow depending on engine rpm and current power requirements.

The manifold itself is a pretty reliable component that rarely requires replacement due to wear and tear. The most common problems with this intake unit are caused by a leaking gasket or malfunctioning air management valves. Whereas the gasket problem can be solved with its replacement, which is time-consuming but inexpensive, the failure of the valves will likely require the replacement of the entire manifold.
