Unveiled at the 1955 General Motors Motorama, the Chevrolet Biscayne entered production in 1958. It was a full size car specifically designed for the fleet market, even though it was also available for regular buyers. The idea behind the Biscayne was to offer a functional but spartan vehicle, providing all the transportation features of a full size car, lowering, however, the costs by eliminating all the unnecessary trimming and finery. Through the years, four generations followed and the Biscayne received several updates, both regarding the overall body shape and the engine offer. Over its production period, the Biscayne was the least expensive model in the Chevrolet lineup and proved to be a very good seller. In 1972, the model was eventually discontinued.
