Magnesium alloys, which have potentials above 1500 mV (ref. Cu/CuSO4), are mainly used in the presence of high resistivity electrolytes (fresh water, soil, etc.)
All of them are characterized by the addition of manganese 0.2 ÷ 1.2% and for the most common versions zinc 2 ÷ 4% and aluminum 5 ÷ 6%.These types can also be used in the presence of high temperatures, such as inside a boiler.They are also suitable for structures that require fast effects or temporary cathodic protection. Magnesium anodes have a performance of around 50% and while they have a fast-acting use in marine environments, they also deliver a high degree of protection. However, due to the speed at which they corrode, they are not recommended for use in brackish waters. Another limit to their use is the fact that magnesium is a metal which can be difficult to store. It begins to corrode with the slightest moisture in the atmosphere and is difficult to machine due to its potential to become a fire hazard.
