In response to a rising number of accidents and fatalities caused by tire failures due to underinflation, Congress mandated that cars and light trucks had to be equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) beginning in 2007. A TPMS alerts drivers of underinflated tires so they can inflate/repair/replace the tire(s) in question, to avoid an unsafe driving condition and possible accident. Besides poor fuel economy and abnormal wear, underinflated tires can cause unsafe vehicle handling and make the tires run hotter, which can drastically reduce their lifespan and even result in total failure. Overinflation can also cause problems, with accelerated wear to the center of the tread, and reduced traction and tire lifespan. TPMS or not, you should regularly check your tire pressure with a reliably accurate gauge. But even if you’re fastidious about inflation pressure, it won’t help if you pick up a nail on the road – unless you have the Torxe TPMS kit. Once the LCD display monitor is plugged in and the sensors are installed, turn the ignition key to ON. The LCD display will turn on and start showing data in real time when vehicle speed reaches 12.4 mph (20km/h). You can switch from displaying tire pressure to displaying tire temperature with just the touch of the “SET” button located on the side of the monitor. Pressure can be displayed in psi or bar, but temperature is displayed in degrees Celsius. The LCD display comes configured with pre-set threshold settings, but you should program the unit according to your vehicle’s factory recommended tire specifications. The simple set-up procedure allows you to program your tire parameters – high pressure level, low pressure level, and high temperature level. Most OE TPMS systems are calibrated to alert when one or more tires is at least 25% below the recommended inflation pressure. For example, if 32 psi is the recommended inflation pressure, the TPMS would alert if pressure fell to 24 psi. These figures are merely provided as examples and not recommendations for your vehicle, you should choose the thresholds that meet your vehicle’s requirements. Once programmed, if high pressure, low pressure, or high temperature is beyond limits, or you have a tire with a fast leak, the red alert icon, and the pressure or temperature value at the affected tire will flash accompanied by an audible alarm.

The battery-powered tire pressure sensors are pre-coded and marked for left and right and front and rear tire position, and they attach to your valve stems with the included hex nuts. A hex wrench is supplied for tightening. The sensors’ CR1632 lithium batteries should last for 2 years or more. When the monitor display indicates sensor low battery and replacement is required, the sensors can easily be disassembled for battery installation with the included sensor opening tool.
