The distributor takes the high voltage from the coil and parcels it out to the spark plugs. The rotor spins around like a top inside the cap, making contact with the towers that connect to the plugs as it spins. This carefully-timed ballet makes the spark travel to the correct plug in the firing order, and none other. Carrying voltages higher than a Taser, and operating in the extremely hot and dusty environment under the hood, it’s no wonder the distributor cap needs to be replaced at regular intervals. When the insulation on the alkyd plastic cap starts to deteriorate, it can let some or all of the energy in the spark escape, robbing the spark plug, and making for misfires. While cleaning a dirty cap can help for a while, eventually the dielectric coating breaks down from heat and ozone, and becomes electrically conductive. The only fix is to install new parts. Fortunately, replacing the distributor cap is easy. Just remember to change the plug wires one at a time, so you don’t get them crossed. And you probably should replace the rotor at the same time.
