Driven by a belt from the engine, the A/C compressor pumps refrigerant through the A/C system when the clutch is engaged. The main function of an A/C compressor is to take in low pressure refrigerant gas at the compressor inlet and compress it into a high-pressure, high temperature gas, which is sent to the condenser. It must be replaced if it leaks or is mechanically damaged from lack of lubrication caused by no oil, contaminated oil, and sludge, or hydraulic lockup caused by liquid refrigerant entering the compressor or excessive oil in the refrigerant.
