SMI® Manufacturing, Inc was founded in 1996 by John Schuck and his son Peter. While there are many methods available to apply the brakes in a vehicle being towed, there are only a few that are 100% reliable. SMI® philosophy and belief is that the vehicle being towed should have the brakes applied exactly as if it were being driven. This means that the power brakes must be active and that the brake pedal must move. By using the power brakes, pedal pressure requirements are reduced to 12 - 15 pounds. Without power assist, pedal pressure must exceed 60 - 70 pounds just to slow the vehicle. This is just not an acceptable solution and totally unnecessary given the SMI® systems available today.
