Grille Installation Methods

Overlay

An overlay grille (also known as 'bolt-on' or 'bolt-over') is installed over your existing OEM grille. Overlay grille installation style is the easiest and the least time-consuming. Such grilles are generally secured in place with either hidden clamps and bolts or automotive grade double-sided tape, and usually do not require drilling, cutting or removal of the original grille. Overlays can be quickly and easily removed.

Insert

The insert grille replaces the main part of your existing grille, it 'inserts' into the grille opening inside the original grille shell. Installation of this type of grille is much more involved compared to an overlay: the main part of the existing grille is usually cut out using a saw, and holes for the new grille mounting brackets may have to be drilled. Fit tends to be best because you are refitting the original shell. Once installed, an insert grille looks more factory-quality.

Full Replacement

A replacement grille completely replaces your OEM one including both border shell and insert. Typically, installation will be quite easy because unbolting the old grille and factory frame from the vehicle and bolting on the replacement one is all that's required. There is no need for cutting, though, you may need to remove some upper or lower shrouds for access. Replacement grille looks like an integral part of your vehicle rather than an add-on.

Logo Cutout

Some grilles are designed as complete style revamps for the front of your vehicle, though, some may involve OE emblem re-installation. As such, one chooses from two major grille types:

  • With logo cutout: will require factory logo to be re-used (factory logo will be visible).
  • Without logo cutout: such a grille owner may choose from three options here: a) to install the grille without factory logo; b) to attach factory logo using a special mount plate (if included in the package from the manufacturer); c) to install factory logo in a special recess area in the grille.
  • If OE grille emblem has become weather-worn and riddled with chips from stones and other road debris, this should be taken in consideration prior to making a new grille purchase.
