The main reason Alcohol is used for racing is because it has proven to increase horsepower and torque over that of Gasoline. While that reason alone can certainly justify the use of Ethanol or Methanol based racing fuels there are problems that keep many from using Alcohol as a mainstay fuel. Anyone that has had past experience running alcohol as a fuel in racing applications knows of alcohols corrosive nature. Ethanol and methanol alcohols are extremely corrosive to the soft metals that are used within fuel systems. When left for even a small period of time alcohol will corrode fuel system components, rendering the fuel system unable to properly meter fuel flow causing serious engine damage. Racing alcohol is also a very dry fuel with no lubrication for rubber or plastic components such as seals, O-rings and diaphragms, further necessitating the need to flush the fuel system to eliminate any potential problems. Additionally, Alcohol fuels are not able to provide the proper lubrication to the valves and top end components of the engine that require a quality top end lubricant to avoid serious damage.
