Turbochargers have long been used with diesel engines, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that they were widely used on gasoline powered cars, when vehicle manufacturers turned to turbos to wring more horsepower from downsized engines. But those turbos often didn’t deliver the promised level of performance, and they had a less than stellar reputation for reliability, so, when gas prices stabilized and consumers became less concerned with fuel economy, carmakers went back to larger, naturally aspirated engines. With present-day auto makers trying to meet strict CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards, turbos have returned, but not just for performance models. Today you’ll find SUVs with small turbocharged 4-cylinder engines that make more torque than larger naturally aspirated V6 engines, and turbo V6s in pickups that have more towing power than their V8 predecessors. Turbochargers, and their supercharger relatives, are forced induction systems. Unlike naturally aspirated engines, where the cylinders are filled by atmospheric pressure, forced induction systems push air into the engine, forming a dense, oxygen rich air charge in the cylinders, increasing the amount of fuel that can be added, and substantially raising power output. But where superchargers are driven off the crank and consume part of the power they add, turbochargers make use of the “free” energy from the engine exhaust. A turbocharger consists of a turbine wheel and a compressor wheel that rotate on a common shaft within their respective housings. The turbine wheel is plumbed into the exhaust system and exhaust flow spins the turbine blades, which in turn drives the compressor wheel. The compressor section of the turbo is part of the air intake system. Air is drawn through the air filter and intake tube, compressed by the compressor wheel and forced into the intake manifold.

Modern turbochargers are vastly improved compared to those manufactured a few decades ago, in both construction and performance. Advanced metallurgy has made components like turbine wheels and housings, and shaft bearings, much more compatible with high temperatures. Shaft bearings have also benefitted from improved design and better lubrication and cooling. Twin scroll turbo configurations and the use of twin turbos on some applications have virtually eliminated turbo lag. Advancements in engine design like gasoline direct injection, and sophisticated electronic engine controls have also contributed to better performance and longevity. Nevertheless, the miles can take their toll on even the most well designed and constructed turbocharger, and of course, lifespan will be significantly shortened if the vehicle isn’t maintained. Dirt and foreign material can damage compressor blades if the air filter isn’t changed regularly and the integrity of the air intake system isn’t maintained, and the turbocharger bearings can fail due to a lack of oil if the oil level is not maintained or the oil flow is restricted, or if the oil is dirty due to neglected oil changes.
