A lot of heat is created when an engine is running, but only about a third of this heat energy is used to power the vehicle. Roughly another third goes out the tailpipe and the remainder is absorbed by the engine’s metal components. If this heat isn’t dissipated, an engine will soon fail. The cooling system removes this heat and maintains a regular operating temperature that is ideal for performance and longevity. Coolant circulates through passages in the engine, where it absorbs the heat from the metal. The coolant is then pumped to the radiator where the heat is transferred to the surrounding air.
