Racing Turbocharger Blow-Off & Diverter Valves

Turbochargers and superchargers are some of the most popular add-ons of all equipment offered on the aftermarket for racing or motorsport. Given that the engine has a sufficient strength margin, these devices are able to considerably raise horsepower, increase torque in a wide RPM range, and improve throttle response. However, before installing any of them, it's worth taking into account some parts meant to optimize productivity and prevent the failure of the engine and its forced-induction systems due to excessive loads. Wastegates and blow-off valves are some of them.

There is a common confusion related to these components, as they can look pretty similar. Wastegates are installed in the exhaust system, before the turbine, and are used to limit its maximum rotary speed. Blow-off valves are installed in the air intake system, after the throttle but before the compressor, and are meant to relieve the excess air appearing in the intake manifold when you suddenly release the gas pedal, for instance, when shifting gears. There are different constructions of blow-off valves; some of them release surplus air into the atmosphere creating a specific hissing sound, others are known as recirculating diverter valves, which direct this air back to the system. Motors operating without such a valve can encounter compressor surge, which negatively affects the lifespan of this expensive component.
