Roll cages are mandated by the safety rules of just about any form of automotive motorsports. These requirements regulate the number of attachment points, the areas the bars are attached to, the level of strength, and even the welding process. A race car must meet the minimal requirements of a governing body. However, racing is an extremely dangerous type of competition where there's no such thing as too much safety. An 8-point cage is generally considered to be the very least in professional motorsports, but you can always go ahead and upgrade to a 12-point setup or more.

Depending on the vehicle chassis, there are different options and attachment points. On body-on-frame vehicles, the roll cage is attached directly to the frame, while unibody cars require thick steel base plates for each attachment point, welded directly to the floor. Aside from weld-in bars, there are bolt-in structures, which are the only choice for cars which are not built upon a solid steel chassis. A bolt-in bar setup is prohibited in many forms of racing, but it is a simpler and more affordable alternative to weld-in roll cages for street cars that are occasionally taken to the track.
