Major changes have taken place in automatic transmission service in the past decade. The growths of front-wheel drive vehicles, electronics and other factors have caused a dramatic increase of transmission models. In the early days of the automatic transmission, there may have been only five or six transmission models in service. Today, that number is nearly 250 (and growing).
