The Peugeot 604 debuted at the 1975 Geneva Motor Show. Developed to compete primarily with the BMW 5-Series and Citroen CX Pallas, the 604 marked the first Peugeot’s foray into the executive car market segment since the 1930s. Despite the new model was largely based on the existing 504, it got many unique features and its own styling. Throughout the run, the 604 was offered with four engines to choose from, including a 2.7 L PRV V6, 2.8 L PRV V6, 2.3 L XD2S turbo diesel I4 and 2.5 L XD3S/XD3T turbo diesel I4. It was the first production passenger car with a turbodiesel that went on sale in Europe. Despite the 604 was praised by automotive press of the time, it turned out to be a commercial failure due to constantly descending sales. During a 10-year run, only 153,252 units were sold.
