If you do discover problems with your transfer case and need to replace it as soon as possible, or you want to improve the looks of your vehicle with the latest accessories, you need to be able to find the parts that will do the job. The transfer case in your vehicle is an added component to your transmission, because a normal transmission is not able to power all four wheels efficiently. A transfer case connects the transmission to the front and rear driveshafts, which means each one is able to be given the same amount of power, a different amount or even none at all if you are driving with the 4WD turned off.
Because of the amount of power running through the transfer case, it needs to be inherently strong and it achieves this with high-strength steel and materials. Inside the transfer case, you will find the connections to both of the driveshafts, as well as the connection to the transmission and a gear reduction system to convert the power. It uses either a drive chain or a gear system to allow both the driveshafts to spin together, or to have only the rear one working, which is the heart of the system. Some transfer cases will also contain another set of gears for very high torque outputs, and this will form the low-range system on your vehicle.
With the number of parts in a transfer case, and the serious amount of pressure it is under, there are a few problems that can occur if you own your vehicle long enough. One of the most common problems is with the gears or the drive chain, and wear and tear can lead to a complete breakage of either or both of them, which means your transfer case cannot work at all. Less serious problems will be with the connections to either of the driveshafts, and if they fail, then you may not be able to engage 4WD, or you may be not be able to drive at all.
The problems are serious but there are a few symptoms you can look out for to identify and fix them before you are unable to drive anywhere. If you discover that it is difficult to engage or disengage 4WD, and it is taking longer than it normally does, then you might have a problem with the connections in the transfer case. If you can hear loud banging or popping sounds as you drive along, and the sound stops when the vehicle does, then this is a hint that the drive chain has lost teeth or is skipping some. Each symptom will only become worse so taking action is a necessary part of driving.
