When air is pressurized above atmospheric pressure by the compressor of your turbocharger, it gets hotter, so its density decreases. This allows less oxygen to enter the cylinders, which is why your engine performance reduces. For this reason and in order to get the most out of your turbocharged engine, your vehicle is equipped with an intercooler that cools down the compressed air before it enters the cylinders. The intercooler is connected with the turbo and the intake manifold with intercooler pipes, which length, width and the materials they are made from also have an impact on the overall performance.

Depending on the type of intercooler and the power output of a turbocharger, the intercooler piping can be made from different materials, including rubber, silicone, and metal. In many cases, you will find a combination of these materials under the hood of a turbocharged vehicle. While coolant lines and the intercooler-to-engine line are often made from rubber or silicone, the charge pipe that connects the turbocharger and intercooler is usually manufactured from stainless steel or aluminum, or some other metals which perfectly withstand high temperatures and pressure of the compressed air produced by the turbocharger.
