Before condemning the steering gear box, the entire steering system, including the column and linkage, should be inspected for wear and looseness or binding. If there is excessive play in the box, and it cannot be adjusted out with a bearing preload or sector shaft adjustment, then the box should be rebuilt or replaced. A leaking box should be resealed or replaced. Rebuilding or resealing a steering box can be a time consuming and involved procedure, and hardly worth the effort when Omix-ADA has brand new steering boxes ready to install.
