The second-generation Nissan Violet also known as the Nissan Stanza saw the world in 1977. The front-wheel drive model was launched in 1981 and shared the platform with the Compact MPV Nissan Prairie/Multi/Stanza Wagon. The last Stanza rolled off the assembly line in spring 1992 and was replaced by the American-built, Bluebird-based Nissan Altima. The Stanza came in several different body styles. Available as the A10 (1977-1981), T11 (1981-1986), T12 (1986-1990) and the final U12 Series (1990-1992), the Nissan Stanza has a rather long history and good reputation.

Earlier models were smaller and faster cars also known as Datsuns. Later Nissan increased the dimensions of the Datsun that eventually evolved into a 4-door family car. The 1986 T12 Series was available as a 5-door hatchback, which was marketed as the Bluebird in Europe. Fuel economy for the U12 Series with either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission was an average 18 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway.

There were two trim levels of the 1990-1992 Stanza: the XE and GXE. A sporty SE trim was available in 1992, but it was equipped with the same 2.4 L inline 4-cylinder engine of the other two trim level packages. The sporty SE trim level was designed to attract customers who wanted more from their compact family sedan. It was distinguished by a blacked-out grille, rear spoiler, fog lights, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. As a fond farewell to the Nissan Stanza, the 4-door XE sedan was given the Best Overall Value of the Year Award in 1992.
