Founded in 1980 by David Mountain, mountune have been designing and building race engines and fast-road performance parts for over 40 years.
During that time they've powered teams around the world to victory in WRC, BTCC, WTCC, CTCC, GRC, World RX, Formula Ford, F2 and many, many more high-level championships.
In addition, our extensive experience tuning road cars led to multiple Ford factory-special editions powered with our performance upgrades, as well as approved tuner status. This meant that selected road car products (signified as 'mountune performance') would not affect the base vehicle warranty on your Ford vehicle.
This high-level approach and ethos is still applicable today and every product they produce has to pass a stringent sign-off procedure, which in-turn ensures that any product carrying the mountune name, also comes with complete peace of mind.
Mountune was founded in Maldon, Essex UK in 1980 by David Mountain.
Originally focused on developing the British Leyland A series engine for motorsport use, the company expanded quickly backed by the reputation gained from numerous race victories. Ford released the infamous 2.0L YB engine powering the Sierra RS in 1986. David Mountain quickly realized the potential of this twin cam , four valve turbocharged engine and started development for race and rally applications. Mountune's team of engineers worked closely with Ford's own motorsport group based at the infamous Boreham facility in the UK to supply various works teams and 100’s of privateers with Ford YB engines.
In 1990, the Mountune powered Ford Sierra RS500 of Rob Gravitt won the British Touring Car Championship resulting in Mountune supplying race winning engines to customers around the world. In the early '90s, Group A rallying was the pinnacle of its sport and the works Escort Cosworth's were all powered by Mountune-built, 2-liter Ford YB engines.
The Mountune built Ford YB gained global status as the engine to have resulting in podium finishes ranging from touring cars to WRC. 1993 saw Francois Delecour on the podium no less than 6 times finishing in second overall in WRC relying on Mountune power. 1994 brought with it more podiums and victory at the Monte Carlo event - won again by Francois Delecour. 1996 was also a fruitful year with a win at the Rally Indonesia and a host of podiums coming from works driver Carlos Sainz – who finished 3rd in the overall drivers' championship that year too. Of course the Ford YB engine went on to power the Ford Escort RS and over the years, Mountune powered Escorts visited the podium on countless events.
1999 was the launch of the Ford Focus WRC and the 'works' Focus WRC was powered by a Mountune developed Ford Zetec 2-litre turbocharged engine. The highly developed Ford Zetec achieved victories in the famed Safari Rally and many other significant rallies.
With the launch of the Ford Duratec engine platform in 2000, Mountune quickly developed a range of highly tuned engines to support various motorsport applications. Ranging from Formula Ford to Touring cars, the Ford Duratec engine platform remains popular to this day and Mountune continues to offer components and engine assemblies.
The Mountune developed Ford Duratec engine has also been used with great success in the Global Rallycross (GRC) series powering both the very competitive GRC Lites class and the high-powered Supercar platform. Mountune / Ford powered cars have dominated the series since the inception of the GRC series.
2008 was the genesis of the now highly acclaimed Mountune “MP” performance upgrade program for select Ford “ST” and “RS” performance vehicles. The MP product line offers a set of components and technology designed and engineered in conjunction with Ford to optimize peak performance without compromising reliability. The Mountune MP range expanded through the decade with a full line of Ford endorsed upgrades for the popular Fiesta ST and Focus ST platforms.
In 2010, Ford's Team RS in collaboration with Mountune’s engineering group developed the legendary Focus RS500 alongside MP upgrades for the standard Focus RS.
Mountune LLC was established in the USA in 2013 to support the now global range of Ford ST and RS performance vehicles. That year, the Mountune MP215 upgrade for the Fiesta ST and MP275 upgrade for the Focus ST was launched worldwide. An expanding lineup of innovative performance products and components was also made available to meet the growing needs of enthusiasts. Motorsport also became a significant part of the USA operation with a Mountune powered Ford Fiesta ST taking the Rally America 2014 Class Championship.
Mountune also recognized the motorsport potential of the Ford EcoBoost range of 4 cylinder engines and in 2014, commenced with the development of a variety of engines to meet various applications. The Mountune enhanced Ford EcoBoost engines now power several teams in the ultra competitive British Touring Car Championship including several other series throughout the world market.
A new flagship facility located in Southern California was opened in early 2016 to serve the growing market in North America. Dedicated to expanding the global footprint of Mountune, the new operation features engine test and build capability, product engineering and distribution along with customer service facilities including sales and installation.
