The Sunliner is the name for Ford's full-size convertibles produced from 1952 through 1964. The Ford Crestline was the first Sunliner produced from 1952-1954. This vehicle was a real piece of art. The grille sported a single center "bullet" surrounded by a chrome ring and "jet intake" corner markers. A gas gauge, temperature gauge, and a voltmeter were standard. In 1953 power-assisted steering and brakes were available, the center grille bullet lost its ring and was now flanked by vertical black stripes, while the corner markers were plain rectangular lights. The unusual service by Ford was that the radio preset buttons were already set to local stations by the dealer. In 1954 marking the end of an era of the long-lived Flathead V8, the engine was replaced by an overhead valve Y-block V8 unit. The new “Astra-Dial Control panel” speedometer and a four-way power front seat were added.

In 1955 the line of Ford cars gained a new body to keep up with the market. The Ford Fairlane Sunliner appeared in 1955 to replace the Ford Crestline Sunliner. The first generation Fairlane Sunliner was built from 1955 to 1956, and the second generation was built from 1957 to 1958. Apart from engine changes, the first generation Fairlane Sunliner introduced a panoramic windshield found on Buicks, Oldsmobiles, and Cadillacs giving a driver more panoramic visibility. The Fairlane Sunliner also got new brakes, 12-volt electrical system, a new frame, and the first factory installed air conditioner. The Lifeguard safety package included a padded dashboard, breakaway rearview mirror, seat belts, and a deep-dish steering wheel. The second generation Fairlane Sunliner looked longer and lower because of its new chassis. In 1958 the line was upgraded with the dual-headlight front clip and simulated hood scoop. The new 3-speed Cruise-O-Matic automatic and the 2-speed Ford-O-Matic manual transmissions were optional.

In 1959 Ford introduced the new model line called the Ford Galaxie Sunliner that was produced from 1959 to 1964 and was a top-of-the-line offering. With its elegance, the Ford Galaxie Sunliner earned the reputation of one of the most beautiful cars of all time. The Ford Galaxie Sunliner was offered with a range of optional equipment including power steering, power front seats, power windows, power brakes, Sunray multi-colored wheel covers, and air conditioning. The Ford Galaxie Sunliner offered several engine and transmission options to choose from. The horsepower of the 1963 Galaxie Sunliner increased to an astonishing 425.
