Model T cars were built by Ford Motor Company from 1908 until 1927. The Model T was an affordable, practical and versatile automobile that quickly gained tremendous popularity among Americans. Henry's Model T was not just a car – it was the car that revolutionized the world and changed the way people worked and traveled. A Ford customer could buy a reliable automobile for just $825, which basically made the Model T the first car that a majority of Americans could afford, not just the wealthy. A moving assembly line production process utilized at Ford’s Piquette Avenue Plant facility in Detroit, allowed the price of the car to be significantly reduced from $850 in 1908 to less than $300 in 1925.
The Model T, usually nicknamed the “Tin Lizzie” was the most popular car sold in the United States in those years. Between 1913 and 1927, Ford factories built as much as 15 million Model Ts, turning the Ford Company into the world’s largest automobile manufacturer. The Model T was the first mass-produced car that was made with interchangeable parts. Ford offered the Model T in nine body styles, including a roadster, coupe, runabout, town car, touring, and tudor sedan. Before 1913, Ford Model Ts were available in a choice of colors, but from 1913 to 1925 they were mass-produced only in black. A simple and efficient four-cylinder engine generated 20 horsepower and reached a top speed of 40–45 miles per hour. A planetary transmission consisted of two forward gears and one reverse that were controlled by foot pedals. Spark and throttle could be switched with a hand lever located on the steering column.
By using a new type of steel alloy in the production of Model Ts - vanadium steel, Henry Ford left the other American auto makers far behind. Lightweight vanadium steel gave the Model T great tensile strength and durability which explains why so many of the Model Ts have survived today. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Model T, Ford Motor Company has built six Model Ts based on the original 1914 model.
