Ford L-Series heavy-duty trucks were in production from 1970 through 1998. They were distinctively styled and featured a bold hexagonal grille. L-Series trucks were built to replace Ford's short conventional N-Series. The styling of the L-Series influenced other Ford models, including the Ford Torino, Ford Ranchero, and Ford F-100: all of them were redesigned with a hexagonal grille resembling the L-Series. The first-generation L-Series was offered in four size ranges, two grille styles and two hood lengths. Powertrains also included a wide choice of diesel and gasoline engines. The L-Series for the 1971 model year offered a set-back front axle configuration. The rest of first-generation L-Series trucks saw a few major changes. Although Ford's L-Series got few revisions during its production, some elements of its design were used in other Ford models.

In the late eighties, the L-Series design was repackaged into the AeroMax; the truck introduced a number of innovations in class-8 aerodynamics. The changes included the following: a set-back front axle made possible swept-back front fenders along with a smoother form-fitting front bumper; tank skirts, wraparound headlights, and an optional “Aero Bullet” sleeper unit. The first models were called the Aeromax 120, and later on, they were accompanied by the Aeromax 9500. The lifespan of the newer versions was short-lived, though. In the late nineties, Ford sold its heavy-duty truck division to Freightliner Trucks, so the trucks were rebadged as Sterling. The second-generation L-Series was soon redesigned; the heavy truck line was split into vocational/severe-service trucks and aerodynamically optimized semitractors (the Aeromax 9500).

L-Series trucks were nicknamed “Louiseville” after the plant in Kentucky where they were built. The L-Series is a true workhorse of the road.
