When it comes to performance tuning, every part matters. While the engine is burning the air/fuel mixture to generate power, a certain amount of the exhaust gas is produced. The gas should be guided out of the vehicle, and this process requires some energy to overcome back pressure, which appears due to the construction of the exhaust system. This back pressure has to be minimal, but it's still needed for the proper function of the oxygen sensor(s). The more back pressure is, the more energy is needed to push the gases out, and this energy is taken at the expense of horsepower. Performance headers installed instead of the factory exhaust manifolds reduce back pressure and provide the efficient distribution of the exhaust impulses.
