Headers are one of the best ways to unleash the hidden ponies in your engine, but not all headers are created equal. Stock, log type exhaust manifolds are inefficient because more than one cylinder dumps exhaust into the same small space. So called shorty headers are an improvement and much better for exhaust flow because each cylinder exhausts into its own tube. But as their name implies, the short tubes are not long enough for any effective exhaust scavenging.
Borla's XR-1 Long Tube Headers increase exhaust flow beyond just eliminating restriction. The length and diameter of the tubes are optimally designed for the engine's exhaust pulses. As the exhaust pulse travels down the header tube, its momentum creates a vacuum behind the pulse as the exhaust valve closes. This helps "scavenge" the remaining exhaust from the combustion chamber as well as help draw the intake charge in, if there is sufficient valve overlap. Full merge collectors help to maintain exhaust pulse velocity for more effective scavenging. Instead of just cutting the ends of the header tubes and welding on the collector, the tubes are sectioned and "merged" into a cone shape before the collector.
This system also features an "X" pipe, where the pipes behind the collectors include a crossover junction. This junction is necessary because one cylinder on each bank of a V8 engine fires within 90 degrees of crankshaft rotation of another cylinder on the same bank. The exhaust pulses from these cylinders compete for space in the exhaust pipe beyond the collector, creating backpressure. This junction reduces backpressure by allowing it to escape to the other side of the system, thereby equalizing pressure on both banks.
The end result is increased power, especially low end torque, and improved performance you can feel in the seat of your pants!
Besides greatly improving your car's performance, these Borla headers are light, rugged and great looking. They're made of the finest austenitic stainless steel, so forget about rust and corrosion; they can even be polished to a high gloss should you be so inclined. They have thick, warp proof flanges for leak-proof sealing and come complete with everything required for installation, including detailed instructions.
