Backup And Dash Cameras

In this article, we`ll discuss and review the backup camera and dash kits we offer. Once you take a look, you`ll be convinced about the convenience, safety, and real-world benefits they offer.
Backup And Dash Cameras

According to the U.S. National Safety Council, 30% of reported accidents occur when one or more vehicles involved are backing up. This totals to over 300,000 incidents a year and costs approximately $1.3 billion in damages. The news gets worse when personal injury is factored in, and young children fare the worst. On an average week in the U.S., 48 children are injured and 2 die as a result of vehicles backing up. In 82% of those cases, the children involved were under 4 years old, and most of that 82% consists of children under the age of 1.

Children
None of these 62 children can be seen from the driver's seat of this SUV. Backup cameras can literally save lives.

A driver backing out of a parking space will usually be found at fault when a collision with another vehicle going forward happens. The simple reason for this is because blind spots (areas where the driver's view is blocked completely by parts of the vehicle) are much worse when looking rearward than forward. Just how bad are they? In a recent Consumer Reports test, rear blind spot distances were tested for over 100 vehicles by positioning a 28-inch cone behind each vehicle where drivers could just see its top. A driver 5'1" tall had a blind zone range of 17-29 feet inside small cars, 25-39 feet inside large SUVs, and 24-45 feet inside pickups of all sizes. A driver 5'8" tall had a blind zone range of 6-19 feet inside small cars, 14-25 feet inside large SUVs, and 17-31 feet inside pickup trucks.

In this article, we'll discuss and review the backup camera and dash kits we offer. Once you take a look, you'll be convinced about the convenience, safety, and real-world benefits they offer. Cost is far less than vehicle manufacturers charge for similar option packages, and you'll find their low overall complexity makes for simple, easy installation. Whether you decide on an entire kit or wish to purchase cameras or rearview mirror monitors separately, we've got a great selection.

Backup cameras mount on the back of the vehicle and provide rearward visibility where there normally isn't any. Often, rearview display mirrors feature built-in digital displays. Video feed from the rear mounted camera will pop into view automatically as soon as reverse gear is selected, then stay on for a few seconds after the vehicle begins moving forward.

If You Drive A Commercial VAN, RV Or Tow A Trailer, Backup Cameras Will Make Life Much Easier

The risk of backup accidents and injuries are multiplied in commercial vans and RVs with extremely hindered rear view because there are no side windows, or the ones present are obscured by curtains or cargo. It's a long way back from the driver's seat to the rear of the vehicle, and the small windows located on the rear doors appear many times smaller than they really are - leaving the driver virtually no visibility at all. Some commercial vehicles simply have no rear windows.

Commercial Van
If you've got zero rearward visibility, backup cameras give you a wide view where you need it most.
Blinding
Glare can reduce rearward visibility, especially in open parking garages.

Low visibility situations in reverse can also be greatly amplified in parking garages for drivers of any car or truck. Heavy glare caused by daylight streaming in from areas of the parking garage exposed to the outside can be blinding, and dim lighting inside the garage is not enough to offset it. Since backup cameras are built to adjust to brightness and darkness, they can be a great asset in all lighting conditions.

Trailer
If this is the only view you have of your trailer, you need a backup camera on your vehicle.

If you tow a trailer, backup cameras will take the guesswork and anxiety out of all the challenging situations you deal with. For starters, lining up your tow hitch with the trailer coupler in order to hook things up will be incredibly easy. When reversing, use the on-screen display to make sure the trailer’s tongue is centered in the middle of your screen. Being able to line up in one maneuver will pay dividends – especially when others are watching and waiting. And because cameras can be set to display a constant image while driving forward, it's easy to keep a watchful eye on your trailer assembly on the road.

Backup Cameras To Assist With Towing Trailer
When backing a boat trailer down a loading ramp, backup cameras let you see exactly where you are.

And if you’re backing a boat trailer down the loading ramp, you’ll know exactly how far into the water you are. Because cameras can be set to display a constant rearview image while driving forward, keeping a watchful eye on your trailer assembly will put your mind at ease on the road as well.

Rearview Mirrors With Built-in Display For The Backup Camera

Thanks to TFT (thin film transistors) and LCD (liquid crystal display) technology, rearview mirror assemblies can be built with a thin wafer layer of amorphous silicon deposited on the inside of the glass. This layer of transistors is otherwise invisible until it's powered up to display a high resolution video image from a camera.

If you're looking to build your own rearview camera setup with individual components or upgrade an existing one, we offer LCD display rearview mirrors by themselves. The BOYO® 4.3" TFT LCD Digital Rear-View Mirror Monitor, and BOYO® 6" TFT LCD Rear-View Mirror Monitor are compatible with any camera and come with high-resolution color display and two input jacks should you wish to add a second camera later.

The Boyo 4.3" LCD Digital Rearview mirror adds built-in Bluetooth and automatic pairing, so it can connect with smartphones for hands-free conversations. An external microphone is included and a caller ID feature will display the phone number of incoming calls on the mirror glass.

Dash Cameras

The phrase "Dash Cam" refers to cameras that are pointed forward to record what's ahead. They can be mounted to the windshield or to the dashboard itself. A search of the internet using just the words "crash videos" will reveal footage from across the globe that illustrates all the reasons dash cams offer unparalleled protection on the road.

While backup cameras focus on what's behind the car, dash-mounted cameras automatically record your trip from a driver's vantage point. Should an accident occur because someone cut you off, turned across your path without warning, or pulled out from a side street directly in front of you, dash cams can document your innocence in cases where you might otherwise be blamed. Plus, they'll record and store any breathtaking scene on a road trip that comes and goes before it's possible to capture it with a cell phone camera.

There are dash cams with built-in Global Positioning (GPS) functionality that notes your location during recording. If you're interested in a straightforward dash cam, the iTronics iPass offers a dual lens camera for higher resolution along with night time recording enhancement and GPS.

Backup Cameras By Themselves

If you're looking for individual camera units to mount on your vehicle, we've got a great selection.

Rearview Camera
Rearview cameras such as this one from Pioneer can be mounted on any flat surface or in any nook.

For the easiest, most discreet mounting, take a look at license plate wraparound cameras such as the Tview® License Plate Built-In Back Up Camera and the Pyle Low Lux License Plate Backup Camera. Because these appear at quick glance to be nothing more than standard license frames, the camera goes virtually unnoticed.

If you prefer discretion, PAC's Keyhole Camera is designed to install in place of your trunk/tailgate lock cylinder - chances are you probably never use your key there anyway. The Brandmotion Rear Vision Camera is discreetly tucked into an included tailgate handle assembly for select trucks and SUVs.
