A fuel level sensor tells how much fuel is left in the tank. Basically, it consists of three components. A float rests on the surface of the fuel and is connected to an actuating rod that travels up and down as the level of the fuel changes. The most important part is a resistor, which actually signals ECM (Electronic Control Module) the level of fuel contained in a tank. A faulty fuel level sensor makes a gauge read wrong, for example, tell “full” for a long time after a fill-up.
