After the kit has been prepped and painted, the double face tape should be applied to the parts. The tape is not pre-installed on parts prior to shipping because the tape can be contaminated during the sanding / priming and painting process. The first step is to clean the tape flange on the back of the parts where the tape will be applied. Make sure the complete tape flange is clean and free of all primer and paint. Using lacquer thinner on a clean rag, thoroughly clean the tape flanges on all parts of the kit. Using the adhesion promoter bottle with felt tip supplied, apply it to the tape flanges - be careful not press too hard causing too much to be applied. The adhesion promoter will leave a thin clear polymer primer film that will increase the bonding strength of the double face tape. The tape should be applied 1/8" down from the top edge of the part so that it cannot be seen after the kit is installed. The tape is to be applied from the wheel well to the center. Press the tape firmly to the surface to insure good adhesion. Repeat the cleaning and adhesion promoter steps on all parts of the kit.
STEP 1: Remove all the hardware and screws attaching the damaged parts to the car.
STEP 2: Insert a wedge between the part and the body of the car. This will cause the tape to separate from the car and allow for easier removal. Once the wedge is inserted, use a razor blade to remove any tape that is still attaching the part to the car. NOTE: Complete removal of the double sided tape from the car will occur in Step 4. DO NOT use a razor blade to directly remove the tape from the car. (See Images #1-3)
STEP 3: Assemble the decal remover and attach it to the air drill. (See Images #4-6).
STEP 4: Using the decal remover, remove any excess tape from the car. Use lacquer thinner to clean off any additional residue remaining on the car. (See Images #7-8).
STEP 5: Using the decal remover, remove the remaining tape from the parts. (See Images #9-11)
STEP 6: Clean the parts with lacquer thinner to remove any excess residue. Be sure to thoroughly clean the area where the double-faced tape will be re-applied. Apply adhesion promoter to the tape flanges to ensure proper adhesion of the double-sided tape. (See Image #12)
STEP 7: Reapply the double-sided tape to the parts. The tape should be applied 1/8" from the edge to ensure that the tape can not be seen once the kit is re-installed. Press firmly down on the tape to ensure proper adhesion. (See Images #13-14)
STEP 8: Referencing the instructions for your specific kit or accessory that was included with the original shipment, refer to the specific section that details on how to properly place the part on the car. Use a grease pencil to mark where the part should be placed on the car. These marks will be used as a reference during final installation of the part (See Image #15)
STEP 9: Remove the part from the car. Using lacquer thinner on a clean lintfree cloth, wipe the paint surface where the tape will attach. Be careful not to remove the grease pencil marks. Using the adhesion promoter supplied, apply the promoter to the paint surface where the tape will attach.
STEP 10: Peel back a small piece of the red plastic backing from the tape, making a tail that can be pulled when the part is installed. Place the part on the car, positioning it by using the grease pencil marks previously made as a reference. Starting with the center section pull the red backing tail and firmly press the part to the paint surface in order to insure good adhesion of the double face tape.
STEP 11: Refer back to the original instructions for the remaining installation steps for the part/parts.
CAUTION!!! Parts that are prepped, painted or installed cannot be returned or exchanged. Check all parts numbers to ensure that it is the correct part. 3dCarbon acknowledges that occasionally incorrect parts that are visually similar (ie: Edge and MKX Front Air Dams) are shipped by mistake. Thus it is important to double-check all parts received before prepping, painting and installation occurs.
CAUTION!!! IF HEAT WILL BE USED TO CURE THE PRIMER OR PAINT, DO NOT EXCEED 140 DEGREES F WITH UNSUPPORTED PARTS. THE URETHANE PARTS CAN BE WARPED AND DAMAGED FROM THE HEAT.
IMPORTANT: The above solvents and paint components contain materials that may be hazardous to your health. Read and be sure that you understand the warning messages on the labels of all components. Follow instructions for positive airline respirator use. Wear eye and skin protection. Observe all applicable precautions. See Material Safety Data Sheet and labels for additional safety information and handling instructions. (May be necessary to sand sides of Rockers with 600 grit paper to remove Molding tracks in part).
**If Additional Cleaning is Necessary-Wash with Simple Green All-Purpose Cleaner.
Step 1: Inspecting the Parts
Check to ensure that the parts received are correct. Check the part number stamped on each part and compare it to the instructions (or invoice). NOTE: Parts that are prepped, painted and/or installed cannot be returned or exchanged.
Step 2: Initial Cleaning and Preparation
Note: This step has already been performed at 3dCarbon prior to the parts shipped. The following steps are for your information only.
Step 1) Using warm water with a red scotchbrite and sanding paste sand the entire part front and rear completely paying special attention to side edges of the rockers and fascias, making sure they get sanded completely.
Step 2) Dry surface completely using dry towel and compressed air.
Step 3) Clean part with Dx-103 Plastic Cleaner or 330 Wax and Grease.
**Caution: Use gloves when handling parts to prevent substrate contamination, if re-cleaning is required prior to painting, use Dx-103 Plastic Cleaner.
Step 3: Application of Primer
If you have a spray booth with baking ability, place the parts in the booth and position them in the booth. Position the parts so that they are supported in a natural position. CAUTION: Do not exceed 120 degrees temperature. The heat will make the polyurethane softer and if they are not supported correctly they could become damaged.
On the parts that have a tape flange on the back like louvers, side skirts, door caps, apply masking tape 1/16" - 1/8" on the back to prevent the overspray from the primer and paint getting on them. The double face tape will not adhere to the any primer or paint.
Step 1: Application of Primer
Step 1) Shake primer before using.
Step 2) Mix PPG'S SX1057 Primer and Dx 8 hardener as follows:
Step 3) Mix Ratios:- 8 Parts 1056 Primer, - 1 Part DX8 Hardener, - 1 Part DT Reducer (Dt 800 series or 870 series reducer). Note: Pot life 1.5 hours @ 70 degrees F.
Step 4) Stir product after mixing.
Step 5) Spot primer Rocker ends, Fascia ends, spoiler ends.
Step 6) Apply (2) Wet coats of SX1057 Primer - Dry Film 1-1.5 Mils.
Step 7) Bake off parts at 120F for 30min.
After primer has completely cured, sand spot primed areas with 600 grit sand paper. May be necessary to spot.
Step 6: Application of Sealer
Step 1) Mix PPG's SX1057 Primer and Dx 8 Hardener.
Step 2) Mix ratios:- 4 Parts SX 1057 Primer, - 1 Part Dx 8 hardener, - 1 Part DT Reducer (Dt 800 series or 870 series Reducer).
Note: Pot life 1.5 hours at 70 degrees F.
Step 3) Stir product after mixing.
Step 4) Spot prime rocker ends, Fascia ends, Spoiler ends.
Step 5) Apply (2) Wet coats of SX1057 Primer - Dry Film 1-1.5 Mils.
Step 6) Bake off parts at 120 degrees F for 30 min.
Step 7: Application of DBC - Basecoat Color

Step 1) Mix Ratio:- 1 Part Deltron DBC Base Coat, - 1 Part DT Thinner, - 5% DX57 to reduced color
Step 2) Apply 2 coats, allow to dry for de-nib sanding
Step 3) Blow off and clean with DX103 Plastic Cleaner, then tack wipe
Step 4) Apply 1-2 more coats of base or until hiding
Step 5) Allow 5-10 min (temp dependent) flash time between coats
Step 6) Allow 15 min before clear coat is applied
**Must be sanded and recoated if allowed to sit for more than 24 hours
Step 8 *****Inspect for Defects*****
Step 9 Application of Clear Coat - DCU 4000
Deltron DCU 4000 Acrylic Urethane Clear Coat
Step 1) Mix Ratio:- 4 parts DCU 4000 Clear Coat, - 1 Part DCH 3095 Hardener, - 10% DT Reducer (Subject to examining the viscosity)
Step 2) Apply two even wet coats (Target Dry Film 2-2.5 Mills)
Step 3) Allow 5-10 mins flash time between coats
Step 4) Bake immediately after last coat
Step 5) Bake at 140 degrees F for 30 min - Part Temp.
Step 6) Cool Down 2 hours before polishing
Step 10 Polishing Process - Fresh Paint
Use 3m Products for compounding fresh paint (Use caution)
Step 1) De-nib using 1500-grit then 2500-grit sandpaper
Step 2) Compound using 3M Polishing System
Step 3) Clean completely using clean, white micro-fiber towel
