It was just a year ago that BMW gave its 2-Series lineup a major technical upgrade, having added more powerful engines, new options packages, and refreshed standard equipment. So for 2018, BMW didn't want to mess with what is already considered one of its best driving cars. The 2018 BMW 2-Series received only subtle visual changes to complement the powertrain upgrade of the previous year. Up front, there are new hexagonal bi-LED headlights that replaced the last year's circular units and are now offered as standard. The integrated “eyebrows” above BMW's distinctive Angel Eyes create a different impression. Front end changes continue with a larger kidney grille and wider air inlets. The only change to the rear is a refreshed LED tail light design. A couple of new color choices (orange and blue shades) were added to the exterior color palette. Revised wheel styles complete the list of visual tweaks. An aggressive blacked-out look is offered by the M2 Edition Black Shadow limited to roughly 12,000 units. It is painted Sapphire Black and comes with alloy wheels finished in matte black, high-gloss black kidney grille, and black leather interior with blue stitching. Some exterior accessories like mirror caps, side panel trim pieces, and rear diffuser have a carbon finish.

The interior looks slightly different as well. The steering wheel, dashboard, center stack, and center console were revised, and buyers now have more material options. The 2018 BMW 2-Series comes with minimalist gloss black trim as standard, while optional wood and aluminum accents add a touch of refinement. Tech-wise, the 2018 2-Series received the next-generation iDrive 6.0 infotainment. A 6.6-inch standard and 8.8-inch optional (if the navigation system is added) screens are now touch-sensitive. A full suite of driver assist systems is a carryover from the previous year and includes an automatic parking system, active cruise control with stop-and-go feature, automatic emergency braking, and other technologies.

The 2018 2-Series by BMW is offered either as a coupe or convertible, and in the 230i and M240i variants. Powertrain options remain unchanged, given they got a serious refresh for 2017. The 230i models are motivated by a 2.0L I4 good for 248 hp, and more powerful M240i versions pack a 3.0L 335-hp I6, both turbocharged. Standard for these cars are an 8-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, but a 6-speed manual and AWD are available. For those who need more thrill, there are performance-oriented rear-drive M2 models. They have a 3.0L turbo I6 that ups the pony count to 365 hp.
