Adding spacers between the leaf springs and the axle is one of the simplest ways to raise the ride height of your truck. Whether you want to level the truck out, raise it a few inches for some tire clearance, or reach for the skies, you'll probably be needing longer U-bolts. You may need to make a number of other modifications as well, like longer spring shackles, steering mods to keep the geometry correct, and realigning the driveshaft to keep the u-joints straight, but a longer U-bolt is probably in your future.
Another mod that often requires a longer U-bolt is adding helper springs for extra-load carrying capacity. While technically not a lift, the extra spring pack, sometimes including a spacer, means the stock U-bolts just aren't long enough. Remember, for safety, any fastener should have a full two threads protruding from the nut when it's torqued down to ensure the threaded joint is able to develop full strength. These premium U-bolts are 365 mm in length and use 14mm flange nuts (included). Not for dual-wheel trucks.
