First pump was DOA, no power assist, but upon notification, CARid and Cardone quickly provided a free replacement which works great. Installation in 95 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel is a challenge, requiring removal of drivers side battery and intercooler to intake up pipe for access. I left the vacuum pump in place, and reaching from above used a small hand operated transfer pump to empty the old power steering pump reservoir. Using a 15 mm interference box wrench I was able to reach all four mounting studs to remove the nuts and free the power steering pump from the vacuum pump. I then disconnected the pressure and return lines from the pump. Be careful when installing new pump to insure tabs on pump shaft align and engage with slots in drive coupling inside the vacuum pump. Remember to install new pressure and return lines when installing a new pump, and flush the steering box and lines with an approved power steering fluid. I used my hand operated transfer pump to flush the system with 2 gallons of fluid before installing the new pump. After installation, with engine OFF and front wheels off the ground, slowly cycle steering full left to full right at least a dozen times to remove air in the system. Remember to add a magnetic filter to the new return line before you start the engine, so your new pump isnt chewing on anything left in your old steering box. Take your time, be patient and thorough, and youll be rewarded with a working, quiet, smooth power steering system.
