Jeep Wrangler 1987, Main Shaft by Omix-ADA®. Direct Fit. OE Style. The mainshaft supports the transmission gears and synchronizer assemblies and transfers the engine's power to the driveshaft or transfer case. It's generally a very durable part, but the splines, bearing surfaces, and gear journals can become damaged. The transmission mainshaft is supported at the front by bearings at the input shaft and in the center by case mounted bearings, and by a bushing at the rear. When the transmission is disassembled, inspect the mainshaft splines for cracks, twisting or other damage. Check the bearings surfaces and gear journals for any signs of wear or scoring that would prevent bearing function or gear rotation. Each gear should turn freely on the shaft without binding or excessive play. Measure shaft runout to check for a bent condition.
