All engines outgas crankcase fumes. That's a given. Crankcase vapors are a noxious miasma of cylinder blow by, oil fumes, water vapor, acids and partially burned fuel. Emissions controlled engines have sometimes elaborate systems to route this noxious gorp back into the intake manifold. Sometimes that works well, sometimes not. And as your engine gets older and the rings and valve stem seals wear, the volume of blow by inevitably increases. If you have an engine that's not emissions regulated, whether it's a racing engine, a small engine on a tractor or ATV, or just a stationary engine on a pump or generator, it's essential that a filter be installed on the vent. A filter will keep dirt from collecting inside the vent when the engine is off, and eventually migrating into the crankcase. And let's not even consider the damage a cache of spider eggs or even some nuts or seeds smuggled into the breather by a rodent could cause.
Adding a Green Filter crankcase filter will keep outside stuff outside of your engine. Because it passes airflow so easily, it will take a long time to accumulate enough congealed oil and sludge to plug. Like a Green Filter air filter, simply spray it down with cleaner, rinse it off in water, let it dry and re-oil. In fact, a Green Filter crankcase filter should catch a fair amount of oily blow by and keep it in the filter medium. That will keep your engine bay cleaner longer!
