The lubricants inside your transmission are highly important for it because they allow it to continue to run cool even while it is working hard. This means that even though you are driving at speed and putting pressure on it, it is not going to overheat and stop working. In automatic transmissions, the right fluid is also used to change the gears because it flows at different pressures throughout the system depending on the load on the engine.

There are a number of different types of transmission lubricants, and your vehicle's manual should tell you exactly which type you need. The most common type is Dexron III or Mercon, which is used in most GM, Ford and imported vehicles. If you have an older vehicle, you may discover that you need to use Type F. Finally, some transmissions can benefit from heavy friction fluids, or HFM, which will allow your transmission to run harder for longer, so you can drive particular vehicles in particular ways.

If you are not using the right type of transmission lubricant, or you have allowed it to get too old inside the component, you may run into a number of problems that can remain hidden until it is too late. For instance, an automatic transmission could be regularly overheating without any signs, so when you do discover the warnings the damage has already been done. If the wrong lubricant is used, or the right one is used for too long, you could even find that the internals of the transmission become warped and are not protected from the friction they are subjected to.

The easiest way to avoid problems is to replace the lubricant as required by the vehicle's manual, because if symptoms arise, it may be too late to avoid damage. Such symptoms can include things like the transmission failing to change gear properly, and it can take longer to do so than normal. In the worst case scenario, you may find that the transmission is unable to change gears at all, and this can happen when the transmission has been forced to deal with too much heat and friction for too long. Thankfully, the right maintenance can usually prevent these problems!
