What is the Difference Between Grille Insert and Bolt-On Overlay Grille?
If you’re shopping for a different grille for your car or truck, you’ve probably come across terms like “replacement”, “insert”, and “overlay”, and wondered what they mean. As the name implies, an overlay grille installs over your existing grille. The insert grille replaces the main part of your existing grille, it “inserts” into the grille opening inside the original grille shell.

"I bought these grille insert pieces to fill in the large spaces in the OEM grille in order to keep rocks out of the radiator. They dress up the grille nicely, fit perfectly, and are easy to install without removing the OEM grille. You do not need to remove the grille, even though the instructions say to. However, I did not use the very top piece, which wasn't necessary for appearance or filling space. If you use this piece, you do have to remove the grille. The only drawback I see is that the grille inserts are only held in by L brackets pulling on the OEM grille. The grille flexes a lot where these L brackets tighten up, be careful not to over tighten or you will crack the grille. Do while plastic is warm, not cold."

"I bought this because I didn't really like the looks of the stock grill and think this provides a much cleaner appearance. Everything went relatively smoothly but this is not a 1 hr. job either. The instructions were good except the part about releasing the tabs on the bottom of the grill shell. When you look down from top at the back of the grill shell still installed on the truck, you can see 2 sets of tabs. One set holds the grill into the shell and the other set, the ones you want to release, holds the shell onto the truck. You have to use substantial pressure on the tabs while also pulling on the bottom of the shell outward. The instructions made it seem like the tabs would release easily. I was slightly nervous about how much pressure I was using to release the tabs because I didn't want to break anything on a brand new truck. Once you get the feel for it, everything goes smoothly. It's a good idea to mask the painted parts of the shell to prevent any damage while cutting the grill out. Overall I'm very happy with the installation and look of the grill. Much better looking that the stock one."

I was notified with UPS tracking information immediately, and the grille arrived the day they said and was packaged very well. Upon opening it, I was impressed by the heavy metal feel to it. The instructions were very detailed, step-by-step and easy to follow. Total installation time was about one hour. Closing the hood and looking at the finished product I am Incredibly pleased with my new grille!!! "
