About Renault Alliance

Renault Alliance was a sedan produced and sold in North America by the AMC Corporation. Renault Alliance came off in 1984 to the market before the Encore hatchback. The Encore model shared many of its components and options with the Alliance. Renault Alliance was offered with a range of engines from 1.4l to 2.0l, equipped with 3-speed automatic or 4-/5-speed mechanic transmissions.

Renault Alliance was produced as a 2- and 4-door sedan. Production was launched in June 1982 and it was sold and advertised as a Renault nevertheless it had an AMC logo. Renault Alliance came into Car and Driver Magazine “Ten Best” list in 1983, and the same year won the “Motor Trend Car of the Year” contest. Since 1985 2-door sedans were produced as convertibles. In 1987 model year, the Renault Encore (the next generation model) hatchback, based on Alliance platform, was included into the model range.

With Renault Alliance the AMC Corporation could cover the expenses, spent on the AM General line of military vehicles. The C-type engines with displacement range from 1.4l to 2.0l together with simple suspension setup resulted in a pleasant driving experience. The production of Alliances was ended after the Chrysler Corporation bought AMC. The 1988th model Alliance officially was never built, yet some units were produced.
