Like many businesses, Precision Gear was born out of necessity. Unable to get the gear ratio he needed for his Ford drag racer, company founder Tom Reider contracted with another gear manufacturer to make the gears he needed, but had to buy 50 sets for the company to fill the order. He was subsequently able to sell the remaining gear sets and soon found that other racers in all forms of motorsport had similar needs. Tom soon became more involved in the gear manufacturing business, and in 1986 he left his design management position at the Ford Motor Co. to begin Precision Gear.

Each Precision Gear ring and pinion set starts out as a high quality steel ingot that is preheated and then forged in a multi-step CNC controlled die pressing process, using up to 8 million lbs. of pressure! During this process, tolerances are held to approximately 0.005. After forging, each set is machined and the gears cut using state-of-the-art machining centers. Precision uses a rolling process to create the splines and threads on the pinion shaft, instead of cutting, for a stronger and more uniform product. The final step is a multi-step heat treating process to make sure the gears can handle race car type horsepower.
Precision Gear offers differentials for every purpose. Clutch-type limited slip differentials come in 1-piece and 2-piece case designs, for both domestic and import applications. They limit slippage and distribute power to both axles. Locking type differentials, like the Ultralite Locker, transmit power through a set of automatic locking dog clutches. The automatic locking action keeps both axles locked together, except when cornering, when they unlock to allow the difference in tire rotation between the outside and inside wheel. This type differential is ideal for severe off-road use.
A lot of horsepower under the hood and big, high-traction tires on the ground is a combination that can quickly reveal any weakness in the drivetrain.
