The Porsche 996 first arrived for the 1999 model year. It is a member of the 911 family but shares few characteristics and parts with Porsche's flagship model. Although most of the exterior's parts were unique, the 996 did share several attributes with the 911, including a rear-engine layout and the use of McPherson struts for its front suspension. The 996 was equipped with a water-cooled DOHC flat-six engine which housed Bosch Motronic fuel injection and produced just under 300 horsepower. At launch, the model was available in both two and all-wheel drive as either a coupe or Cabriolet (convertible).

In 2000, the engine got a boost up to 300 horsepower while stability control (which was already standard on the Carrera 4) became an option for 996 Carrera 2 models. Overseas, a GT3 variant made its way onto the road showing off 360 horsepower and a distinctive, aggressively-styled rear wing. Perhaps, the biggest news for the 996 during this period was the re-introduction of the Turbo, which had also already reappeared in Europe. When it was made available for US car buyers in 2001, the Turbo boasted a twin-turbocharged water-cooled 3.6 flat-six that pumped out 415 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and an automatic Tiptronic transmission.

2002 welcomed the 996 GT2, which would take over the top of the lineup as the series' most powerful model. The GT2 weighed in 200 pounds less than the Turbo but displayed an engine capable of delivering 456 horsepower to the rear-wheels. However, it was not outfitted with all-wheel drive or stability control. Standard versions of the 996 received a boost up to 320 horsepower, as the engine displacement was increased from 3.4L to 3.6L. Porsche reintroduced the Targa after a four-year hiatus, as the body-style made its way into the 996 lineup for the first time. Few notable other changes were made to the 996 parts during the model's run and after 2004, Porsche released the 997 as the next incarnation of the 911.
