Originally a subcompact, then a compact car by Pontiac, the Sunbird was available for 1976 – 1994 model years. The first-generation H-body car was based on the Chevy Vega and came with a 2.3L 78-hp inline-four engine as standard, shared with the Vega. The available engine options included a 2-barrel carburetor version of the base motor, Buick's 3.8L V6, Pontiac's Iron Duke inline-four (became standard in 1977), and the largest one, 5.0L V8 by Chevrolet. The 1982 model year marked the second generation. The Pontiac Sunbird was moved to the J-body platform and received a front-wheel-drive layout instead of the previous rear-wheel drive. During 1982, the car was called the J2000, then it was briefly known as the 2000 and 2000 Sunbird, renamed as a result of Pontiac's intention to market it as a smaller variant of the 6000 model. The third and last generation saw the world in 1988 and was manufactured until 1994, when the car was replaced with the Sunfire.
