The production of the Peugeot 404 started in 1960. At the very beginning of its production run, this compact vehicle was available as a two-door pickup, four-door sedan, and a five-door station wagon. Two years later, a two-door convertible was added to the lineup, and a two-door coupe appeared in 1963. The vehicle's first powertrain consisted of a 1.5L I4 engine making 59 hp and a four-speed manual transmission. Another motor was a 1.6L I4 rated at 71 or 84 hp; later, it was upgraded to 95 hp. A diesel powerplant was also available; it was a 1.95L I4 making 63 hp. The model was discontinued in 1975.
