The importance of the flywheel and clutch is well-known to anyone who has ever driven a vehicle with a standard or manual transmission. Every time you press the clutch pedal, the clutch and flywheel will quickly perform a number of tasks as you move the gear shifter, and when you release the pedal, the components will work in reverse to engage the gear you need.

The flywheel is a circular object with a number of teeth on it, and it is designed to store energy for a short period of time which shows why it needs to be made of extremely strong metals. The clutch plate is connected to the transmission, and it performs similar tasks so that when you release the clutch pedal, the transmission is in the right gear, the flywheel can smoothly connect to it, and your engine continues operating without even knowing what happened. Every component is made of high strength steel to allow it to deal with the high pressures they are under, and they are usually able to last for a long time if you treat them properly.

However, if you are not treating them properly or if they reach a certain age, you will notice a few problems. One of the problems is an inability to smoothly change speed, or an inability to change gear at all, which can occur once the clutch and flywheel are completely broken down. Before these problems occur, the clutch plate can become worn down after much use, making it difficult to engage and disengage, or the flywheel can have similar problems for the same reasons. If the teeth on either are beginning to break and wear down, you may find the clutch ''slips''.

There are quite a few symptoms to watch out for, and because the clutch is such an important part of driving, you will usually notice them immediately. The first problem you will usually notice is that it is difficult to change gear, and when you release the clutch pedal, the transmission may drop into neutral, causing you to have to do it all again. If you discover it is slipping, so it feels like it is in neutral even though you are definitely in gear, then this can be a symptom and you should be taking action as soon as you can. Taking early action can avoid big problems, so it is worth taking notice.

Not For HHR LS
I needed a new clutch and bought the flywheel to improve response from my underpowered HHR LS. It immediately caused an engine code, random cylinder misfire. This will have to be deleted from the computer to pass my next emissions test or they will not test. The new clutch and a light weight flywheel is very challenging to not stall the engine from first or reverse, with the lack of rotating mass to keep it going. Zero% engaged clutch to 100% engaged went from three inches travel to about a half inch like an on/off switch, so up hill from a stop position is squeal or stall. It is improving with clutch wear. A positive aspect of this install is the response has much improved in the rest of the gears. It's just the embarrassing restarts in public. I've got it down to a stall a month instead of daily in the beginning. Overall a sturdy product which will work for many buyers. Some vehicles are just not going to like this installed, or need extra work. It's in the transmission now, so I'm going with it.
