The 2011 Lexus CT 200h Becomes a Top Safety Pick
The 2011 Lexus CT 200h Becomes a Top Safety Pick

On May 26, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced its list of the 2011 Top Safety Picks. The list numbers 66 vehicles, including 1 minivan, 25 SUVs and 40 cars. The 2011 Lexus CT 200h found its place in the category of top safety compact luxury cars.

The IIHS is a non-profit research organization established in 1959 by auto insurance companies. The organization's aim is to reduce the number of vehicle crashes and the rate of injuries in the crashes that occur. The IIHS rates vehicles based on their performance in high-speed side, front, rollover and rear impact tests. To achieve the Top Safety Pick status, a vehicle must get the highest ratings in all the tests, and it must be equipped with Electronic Stability Control System.

After the round of tests, the new 2011 Lexus CT 200h, equipped with various standard safety features, was recognized as the Top Safety Pick. The fundamental safety characteristic of the CT 200h is its body structure, which is designed to be both strong and resilient. To ensure strength of the bodyshell, the car features steel components placed in key areas of the body. The standard Supplemental Restraint System, which comprises knee airbags, stage front airbags, side curtain and front side airbags, protects the driver and the passengers in side and frontal crashes. The pre-tensioners fitted in the front seatbelts protect the occupants in frontal collisions. The Whiplash Injury Lessening design of the front seats provides protection in case of the rear impact. The seat frame and head restraint are designed to absorb energy and reduce the whiplash-inducing movement between the head and torso, eliminating whiplash neck injuries in lower speed rear-end collisions.

When IIHS first began awarding vehicles in 2006, there were only three small cars qualified to the Top Safety Pick status. This year, the Lexus CT 200h and other 12 small cars that got the award proved that small cars are getting more and more safe and that they will give the best safety performance in any driving scenario.

Lexus Announced Pricing for the CT 200h

As Lexus announced earlier this year, the all new CT 200h premium compact hybrid will go on sale in the U.S. in early 2011 as the first dedicated hybrid vehicle in the luxury compact segment. As the launch date gets closer, the automaker has released pricing info, according to which the CT 200h will start at $29,120.

Lexus has also reveled more details on hybrid’s fuel economy. In particular, the CT 200h is going to be the second most fuel-efficient hybrid on the market, having an EPA-estimated rating of 43 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway, with a combined rating of 42 mpg. That makes it outstrip the Honda Insight and the Honda Civic Hybrid, but is not enough to pass Toyota Prius, which is rated at 50 mpg.

The 2011 CT is built on a new platform, using MacPherson struts up front, as well as a special double-wishbone and trailing-arm rear suspension design. The base vehicle comes well-equipped with push-button start, keyless entry, six-speaker stereo with satellite radio, USB port, 17-inch aluminum wheels and dual-zone automatic climate control. Among the optional functions offered are a moonroof, heated seats, genuine leather upholstery, rain-sensing wipers, LED headlights, a backup camera and adaptive cruise control.
