    Isuzu Unveils Reach, Biodiesel-Compatible Van

The 2011 Work Truck Show, which took place in Indianapolis earlier this month, become a podium for the world debut of Isuzu’s new commercial van, the Reach.

The innovative vehicle is based on upgraded Isuzu N-Series platform, which is one of the top-sellers on the U.S. cargo van market. The Reach Van will offer two wheelbase sizes, 134 and 151 inches, and three lengths - 10, 12 and 14 feet. The Reach is said to be more aerodynamic than comparable vehicles, however, this is not where the real fuel economy comes from. The new van spotlights a 3.0-liter biodiesel-compatible engine delivering 150-hp, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that can generate 35% better mileage than traditional cargo vans. The engine also utilizes an innovative catalytic reduction technology, which reduces nitrogen oxide discharge by 85%.

Production of the Isuzu Reach is set to begin this summer. “The Reach is the ideal walk-in van for today’s market because its Isuzu powertrain offers incredible fuel efficiency and proven durability, and its frame, suspension, steering and braking systems are true commercial grade, not just beefed passenger van components,” said Shaun Skinner, executive vice president and general manager of Isuzu Commercial Truck of America. “Today’s fleet and vocational buyers are looking for low cost of ownership, and the Reach lives up to its name—it reaches a new standard in low cost of ownership that no other commercial van can match.”

The Japanese automaker claims that since 1986, more than 80 percent of the cargo van fleets are still in use today, and the new Reach is developed to maintain the level.
