The secret behind the high quality and exotic shapes of Forgiato Wheel lies in the advanced forging and machining processes used by the company. Forging processes combine heating of the metal and applying high pressure, which changes the shape and the molecular structure of metal. Forging includes rolling, hammering and pressing methods or a combination thereof. The forging turns the brittle cast raw material into a much stronger material that can withstand higher bending and shearing forces. By shaping the raw material in the most advanced forging machines available, Forgiato can create stronger, more lightweight and elegant wheels than companies using conventional wheel manufacturing technologies.
1-Piece Monoblock Forged Wheels
''Monoblock'' is the industry term for a 1-Piece Forged Wheel. The Forgiato Monoblock wheels are made from round bar stock of aerospace quality 6061-T6 Aluminum Alloy.
The forging process starts by heating a round flat billet of alloy and pressing it to a rough shape in a forging press. The piece coming out of the forging press is called a ''blank''. The blank is put into a flow-forming machine, to form the barrel of the wheel. The wheel barrel is heated and then formed with high-pressure rollers in a rotary forging process. The rollers ''flow-form'' the barrel, changing not only its shape, but also the structure of the metal. The rolling process aligns the metal grain structure to create a stronger hoop.
Following flow-forming of the barrel, the blank is put into a CNC milling machine for milling of the wheel center to the exact predetermined shape. The wheel is then sent through the finishing processes needed to achieve the final design - plating, polishing and painting.
Monoblock Forged Wheels are lighter than wheels manufactured by other methods and are preferred for exclusive grand touring cars, where the un-sprung weight is essential for maximum road-holding, but there is no need to vary wheel widths to adapt to different tracks.
Forged 3-Piece Wheels
The multipiece wheels were created in racing, where there was a need to adjust wheel (and tire) width and the stance of the vehicles to different tracks. By building the wheels in three pieces, it became possible to build wheels at the track, to set up the vehicle for the specific race track.
The multi-piece build is also attractive to builders of custom vehicles, as they can get the precise fitment they want without going to the great expense of creating a one-piece wheel for the specific measurements desired.
The multi-piece wheels are also easier to customize than one-piece wheels, as each part can be finished separately, before assembly.
In 3-Piece wheels construction the wheel is made up of The Center, The Outer Hoop (lip) and the Inner Hoop (lip). The three parts pass through the same stages of forging and machining as the blank of a 1-piece wheel, and are bolted together after the finishing. A silicone seal makes the joint between the two hoops airtight.
By combining different dimensions of outer and inner hoops, Forgiato can offer a wide variety of rim widths and offsets. Customers can have the exact measurements they require to achieve exactly the desired stance of their vehicle.
Forged 3-Piece Wheels are the most desired by discerning customers and racers as
- truly perfect fitments can be achieved
- the wheels are easy to customize by painting or plating the parts before assembly
- 3-piece wheels have the highest resale value for used wheels
- the wheels are easy to repair if damaged, as the hoops are easy to replace
